What Are Affiliate Links?

Affiliate links are custom or trackable links to product pages and a commission is made on any purchases made using that link. Affiliate links do not effect the price you pay and if you were to visit the retailer directly and find the product yourself, you would pay the same price. Some affiliate schemes may redirect you to very similar products if the product is not available in your region. If you purchase through an affiliate link you will be the customer of the retailer and they will handle your personal information, payment, delivery and customer service. Conversely, the retailer is not involved in and does not support, sponsor or endorse the creator/referrer or their content.

Some retailers may place a cookie on your computer which expires (is deleted) after a set period on your computer. This is how any purchase made within that time-frame can be associated with the referrer. Others may operate using a referral or discount code at checkout. If you don’t see a discount code or if you don’t see anything in the URL at the top of your browser window that looks like it ties your session to a referral, then it may be using cookies or it might not be an affiliate link at all. You should be able to reject cookies when you visit the retailer’s website or you can use a privacy-first web browser to avoid them (I use Brave). To ensure the best experience, as of 4th June 2024 there are currently no trackers or cookies used on this website (see privacy for the latest details) so please consider adding this website to your whitelist or ‘lowering shields’.

How I Use Affiliate Links

I try to use affiliate links to improve my content by linking directly to products that I own and have tested or that I have used within each article or video. For example, a lot of my recent work involves testing products in mini-experiments and therefore it is very natural (and a bit more scientific!) if I link directly to the materials used in the test. A good example would be my slug control video where I purchased items and tested them to find out which barriers prevent slugs from eating plants. Given the variability in product quality between brands, a direct link to the product is really helpful here.

Some content can be expensive to make, especially when testing new products (like the slug control video) or purchasing a lot of materials and having to use more material than I normally would so I can get the right number of shots for the video or a good sample size (my germination tests and grow lights videos spring to mind here). In this case affiliate commission, although usually small, can offset some of these costs.

Sometimes I will link to products that I use regularly and it’s likely that they were involved in the background or contributed in a minor way without being directly featured in the article or video but this isn’t always the case. You’ll see this more often in video descriptions.

At the time of writing, none of my content entirely refers to or attempts to promote a specific product and instead talks about the general product or product category. You will therefore most likely find an affiliate disclosure within an article or a video itself, rather than before you click on the content (e.g. in a title or thumbnail). This is in compliance with the CAP code for affiliate marketing as set out by the Advertising Standards Agency which reflects relevant UK legislation.

What To Do If You Find An Undisclosed Link

The full CAP code can be found here. If you find any affiliate marketer failing to disclose correctly (including me!), please contact the creator directly so that they can amend their work and add the disclosure or you can make a complaint directly to the ASA.
